What Is Depth of Field?
A camera can only focus on a single point, but there will be an area that stretches in front and behind this focus point that still appears sharp. This area is known as the depth of field. This does not be a fixed position as it can change within each picture. You can control this by setting your aperture, also known as your F-stop.
The larger the aperture (F5.6) the shallower the depth of field will be this means only the area in front of the focus point will be in focus too. When the aperture is smaller (F32) the depth of field is much deeper meaning the area of which is in focus stretches further out to the back of the photo.
