What is Landscape photography?
Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes this can be vast or unending, but other times microscopic. This is used to capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features.
Adam Burton
Adam Burton is one of the UK's leading landscape photographers, since 2008 he has been working as a full time professional landscape photographer, regularly supplying imagery and undertaking commissions for a wide range of business clients. He has photographed five of the seven continents and now specialises in the landscapes of the UK, particularly Southwest England.

My Favourite:
This is one of his best picture as he has used a large depth of field due to majority of the picture being in focus. There has been multiples of compositional triangles used layered upon each other as well as the compositional technique of the rule of thirds. You can see this as the pile of rocks on the background, are slightly on a focal point. A fast shutter speed may have been used due the clouds movement frozen as well as the grass being blown by the wind.

Anglesey trip....
In November, I went to Anglesey in Wales for 3 days. Whilst I was there each day we got a task given to us of taking pictures of certain things and to make it the most creative as you could. This was a chance to put our photography knowledge into action...
Day 1...
On the first day there we went to a beach to take pictures. I managed to capture a variety of scenery pictures, I attempted some silhouette photography, at the end of the day using the sunset on the beach. Also through the whole day I took different pictures of everything around the beach .

The task on the first day there was to find different items on the beach such as bottles, nets, seaweed, rocks, shells and anything else we could possibly find. Then out of the items we found, our task was to in groups create something out of them. Our group created a girl figure out of them.

Day 2...
On day two as well as continuing to take pictures of the beach scenery, I also took pictures of close up objects.
Day 3...
On the final day I went on top of the higher cliffs and was able to take more scenery pictures, from a birds eye view mainly.
Overall my Best Pictures:
This photograph has a small depth of field as the front of the picture is in focus and the rest is slightly not. The colour of the boat stands out again the greenery in the background. A compositional technique has been used which is the rule of thirds as the front of the boat which is in focus is on a focal point. This photograph has been taken from eye view. |
I like this photo of a close up, it looks really crisp in the sand. You can slightly see little shadows in the picture which gives it a more interesting look. The fact that half of the print is slightly under exposed whilst the other half is perfectly exposed which can be explained due to the position of the sun. This close u was taken at a birds eye view. |
This scenery picture has to be one of my favourite ones as I have use a compositional technique, which is framing. I have used the greenery around the edges to make the main focus the sea and some of the beach. The basic dull green around the edges brings out the blue in the centre from the water. The rule of thirds has been used for the line vertically where the cliff tops are, as well as the sea being in the middle section. This photograph has a deep depth of field due to majority of it being in focus. |
Editing...
I have chosen a few pictures to edit and give a more professional look to them.
Inspiration:
I decided to use one of Adam Burton's pictures as inspiration as to when I was editing my version of a picture similar to his. However my approach has been slightly different as I have gone for a more darker, vivid colour choice instead of trying to leave it completely natural.
My Favourite:
I really like how I have developed this photograph of natural scenery to make it look as though it looks like a painting or drawing in oppose to a photo. I like how all of the colours are much brighter and appealing to the viewer which will draw more attention. My aim was to leave the potential question, of whether this is a photograph or a drawing/painting, in the viewers mind. |

Evaluation:
Overall I feel that this project has worked really well. I have developed my use of some of the compositional rules ( e.g: the rule of thirds). My research has helped inspire me when editing, as I have used it for ideas of how to improve my photos to look better. The editing has been one of my strong points as I have been able to apply my skills on Photoshop and in some cases drastically improve my original photos. Although this project has gone very well, if I was to redo it or go back to take more photographs I would. However I would mainly focus on close ups to capture something more different compared to just scenery and then being able to explore editing them close ups further.
